Allihies Tuesday

ON a sun-drenched afternoon in the Beara peninsula a record attendance gathered in Allihies for the traditional August 15th fixture.

Fresh from his brilliant Dingle Derby triumph on Sunday, Dylan O’Connor was once again the leading jockey with another double.

The Liscarroll maestro kicked off with Hello Thunder who made every inch of the running to win the 13.2hh contest. Sore Loser threw down a strong challenge up the hill but Dylan was not to be denied.

Dingle third St James made a quick return to action and the decision was well rewarded. The Jim Collins-owned horse got the better of a tremendous duel with Caoimhe Sugrue and Sandra’s Secret to win by a length at the line.

Richard Lynch made the long journey from Kildare to Allihies and he duly landed the featured Allihies Derby with Lily.

Adam Browne Souza tracked another long-distance traveller Little Beauty as the pair dominated from the outset. Lily produced the greater reserves of stamina to lead on the final circuit for a two-length victory.

First win

Julian Pietropaolo made his first visit to Beara a winning one when Heartbreak Hill just denied All Bets Are Off in an enthralling 10-furlong contest.

The pair went head-to-head from the drop of the flag and with the inside berth Kathy Flannery’s grey Heartbreak Hill just held the dual Dingle runner-up.

Jayden Tuite from Listowel gained his first win as a registered jockey when Shelly Baby ran out a snug winner of the 14.2hh race. Michelle Brosnan’s winner led from half-way and was well in command thereafter.

Another Listowel jockey on the mark was John Mulvihill who gave Baby Brown a fine front running drive to land the 12-furlong 15hh event. This one completing a double on the day for owner Kathy Flannery.

Mitchelstown, Co Cork jockey Darragh O’Sullivan continued his fine season when Biscuit made every inch of the running to win the opening 12.2hh contest from Tiny Dancer.
