A FABULOUS exhibition of equine art is now on display at The Osborne Studio Gallery, Motcomb Street in London.

The exhibition is called ‘Straight From The Studio’, renowned artist Hubert de Watrigant’s first for four years.

Each painting speaks of Watrigant’s deep appreciation and knowledge of his metier. In Watrigant’s own words ‘I don’t focus on the main event and principal actions, I prefer to linger on details. I am more interested in the jockey adjusting a stirrup or the lad waiting for his horse.’

Hubert de Watrigant, born 1954, lives in South West France. He comes from an equestrian family (trainer, bloodstock agent). His first exhibition in 1976, he won the prestigious Prix des Sept Collines in Rome in 1977.

Sir Peter O’Sullevan, the revered ‘Voice of Racing’, was a Watrigant collector. He wrote: ‘Hubert de Watrigant is widely regarded as a world leader in racing and equestrian art.

His work has been collected by Her Majesty, our late Queen, and the Al Thani ruling family of Qatar, the King of Morocco, the Niarchos and Wildenstein shipping and art dynasties, and a long list of distinguished names in the racing world on both sides of the Atlantic.

In advance of the exhibition de Watrigant said: “Since my last exhibition four years ago, I thought I would give my pencils and brushes a rest, but I found myself spending whole days painting. In the quietness of my studio and the surrounding landscapes, my work has been transformed in a peaceful way.

“During these four years, my work found a peaceful rhythm and I was able to produce numerous paintings without the feeling of pressure which made me deeply happy. I am a painter, and I don’t know how to do anything else!

“Long live what was four years of my life, which has created a unique collection of studio works for which I am very proud of!
