THE visit by Rachael Blackmore to Dáil Eireann this week has given rise to speculation that the recently-retired jump jockey could be considering entering the world of politics.

Blackmore was a guest of An Taoiseach Micheál Martin who posted on social media: “It was a pleasure to welcome Rachael Blackmore to Government Buildings following her retirement from racing. She is an exceptional sportsperson who made an incredible contribution to sport. A true star.”

Nina Carberry famously went from the weighroom to the European Parliament via a stint as a television personality. However, politican commentator and former Minister Ivan Yates believes it is unlikely Rachael Blackmore will be taking the same route.

Accolade

“I think this is a case of people putting two and two together and getting 22,” he said. “It’s likely Rachael was invited to sign the visitors’ book in the Taoiseach’s office, which is an accolade afforded to important guests and sporting heroes.

“I don’t know Rachael very well but I have interviewed her and I don’t get the impression she would be interested in politics. Also, there is no local or general election until 2029, so it’s far too early to be talking about potential candidates.”
