Wayne Lordan seized his chances at the Curragh on Saturday, steering two highly promising juveniles to Group 2 victories for trainer Aidan O’Brien and Coolmore.

Constitution River set the tempo from the start and maintained O’Brien’s long-running dominance in the Coolmore Stud Wootton Bassett Tom Cooper Irish EBF Futurity Stakes.

Past champions for O’Brien in this contest include Giant’s Causeway (1999), Hawk Wing (2001), Gleneagles (2014) and Henri Matisse (2024). Constitution River, sent off the 5/6 favourite, duly added his name to that distinguished roll.

Runner-up on debut at Newmarket before storming to victory at the Galway Festival, the Wootton Bassett colt showed the benefit of that experience on Saturday. Always in command, he quickened smartly two furlongs from home to leave his four rivals strung out in behind.

Geryon, a proven performer over the course and distance, tried to match strides but was firmly held as Constitution River crossed the line two lengths clear.

O’Brien said: “He’s a lovely, straightforward horse. He’d a lovely run first time and was still very green when he won the next day. Wayne gave him a lovely ride, and he quickened well.”

Though not currently entered in the Group 1 Vincent O’Brien National Stakes, his trainer hinted he could be supplemented for that September feature.

Attention then turned to Composing, another exciting prospect from the Ballydoyle stable, who completed a hat-trick with a dominant display in the Alpha Centauri Debutante Stakes.

After finishing fifth on debut in May, the daughter of Wootton Bassett broke her maiden on her next outing and quickly followed up with Group 3 success in the Silver Flash Stakes at Leopardstown.

Sent off the 4/5 favourite for the Debutante, a race O’Brien had already claimed 14 times, Composing never gave supporters cause for concern. Tracking chief rival Suzie Songs, she quickened clear to score by two and a half lengths.

O’Brien said: “She’s a lovely filly and Wayne said when she got there, she thought it was over. She’s very straight forward and professional. We thought we’d have to make it and we were delighted that Ger’s filly went on.

“If everything is right, she’ll come back here for the Moyglare. She’s so laid back and is the same at home.”
