OWNER/BREEDER Sabena Power was laid to rest on Thursday following a funeral mass at the Church of the Three Patrons in Rathgar, where she met her future husband David back in 1967.

Members of the Power family donned red and white ties and ribbons in tribute to Sabena’s red and white silks, which were carried to Group 1 glory by globetrotter Sole Power and Slade Power, who she bred in partnership with trainer Edward Lynam.

The champion sprinters completed a Group 1 Royal Ascot double in 2014, the same year in which Sole Power was crowned Cartier Champion Sprinter and HRI Horse Of The Year.

Sabena was a popular figure in racing circles, known for her glamour and fun-loving spirit, and fully embraced her success on the track with heartfelt celebrations.

Upon her passing, close friend Edward Lynam commented: “I was lucky to train for her for 20 years. She was a pleasure to deal with; we had some fantastic days. We had many winners, including seven Group 1 winners all over the world. I feel very lucky to have known her and been associated with her. She’s a huge loss.”

Sabena is survived by sons Paddy and Willie, daughters Shani and Tessa, sister-in-law Diana, daughters-in-law Ruth and Jayne, son-in-law Craig and 10 adoring grandchildren.
