It has been another momentous year in horse racing. As interest in “the sport of kings” grows, new and old fans alike have enjoyed watching some of the most exciting meetings in recent history. There are events all across the world on a daily and weekly basis, keeping the sport alive and capturing the imagination of millions.
Horse racing has also benefited from the changes in the global sports betting industry over the last few years. Betting on horse racing has never been more popular, as newcomers look forward to backing their favorites in some of the biggest events. Tradition is everything in horse racing, and we are lucky enough to have countless famous races to look forward to each year.
Many race fans will be looking back on the highlights of the year. But, as 2025 draws to a close, we thought our time would be better spent getting ready for the year ahead. In this article, we will look forward to the biggest horse racing events – from across the world – coming up in the first half of 2026.
Saudi Cup, February 14th
It is one of the more recent big events on the horse racing calendar, but the Saudi Cup has already generated a lot of interest since first being held in 2020. Now recognized as the richest horse race ever held, it boasts a purse of $20 million, with $10 million going to the winning team.
The culmination of Saudi Cup Night, the main event was won this year by Forever Young, the first Japanese-owned and trained thoroughbred to triumph. The colt also won the Breeders’ Cup Classic before finishing third at the Kentucky Derby. This year’s Saudi Cup will be perfect for lovers, falling on February 14th, and will once again take place at the King Abdulaziz Racetrack in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia.
Cheltenham Gold Cup, March 13th
The Saudi Cup is a relatively new addition to the horse racing calendar, but the next big event in 2026 is one of the real traditions of the sport. The Cheltenham Festival originated in 1860 and is still going strong. This four-day extravaganza of pomp and pageantry culminates in the running of the Gold Cup.
The Gold Cup itself was first run in 1924, and last year Inothewayurkhinkin upset the form book to win the race ahead of the much-favored Galopin Des Champs. The Irish thoroughbred was only a late entry to the race but ended up six lengths clear of the favorite. The 2026 Cheltenham Festival begins on March 10th, with the Gold Cup raced on Thursday, 13th.
Dubai World Cup, March 28th
It’s back to the Middle East a month later, with the 2026 running of the Dubai World Cup. It is a sign of just how important the region is to the sport of horse racing that the Dubai World Cup is one of the most important events in the first few months of the year. The 2025 event was the ninth race of a momentous day, with Florent Geroux riding 80-1 outsider, Hit Show, to victory.
The Meydan Racecourse in Dubai, UAE, is where all the action takes place, and 2026 will witness the 30th anniversary of the grand event. The Dubai World Cup offers a purse of around $12 million and attracts a glittering array of global race fans, as well as a good number of celebrities. Next year’s event is guaranteed to pull out all the stops.
Grand National, April 11th
Thirty years might be a good age for the Dubai World Cup, but the next event on our list is one of those races that transcends the sport completely. First run way back in 1839, the whole of the UK stops for the Grand National. Aintree is a cauldron of noise on the day, with all eyes on the most valuable jump race in Europe.
Horses and jockeys navigate the grueling four and a half mile circuit, with some of the fences having become famous in their own right. The 2025 winner was Nick Rockett, ridden by Patrick Mullins. The 2026 edition will take place on April 11th and is sure to be yet another famous addition to the history of the race.
Kentucky Derby, May 2nd
If the Grand National can cause the UK to come to a standstill, the Kentucky Derby is arguably the most famous horse race on the planet. Held annually on the first Saturday of May, the Derby is a cultural phenomenon that has been taking place since 1875. It is the first leg of the prestigious American Triple Crown and kicks off a month of high-intensity horse racing in the US.
Churchill Downs has been the host of this famous event from the very beginning, and last year saw Junior Alvarado ride Sovereignty to victory in front of over 147,000 paying spectators. Over 17 million more watched live on TV. The 2026 Kentucky Derby will take place on May 2nd.

Just the Beginning
As we mentioned, the Kentucky Derby begins the US Triple Crown season, and that is just the beginning of the excitement in horse racing for 2026. With other top meetings taking place every week, fans will be able to enjoy the best the sport can offer as we travel through next year.
The Preakness and Belmont Stakes come soon after the Kentucky Derby, before the global gaze returns to the UK over the summer, with the Epsom Derby and Royal Ascot in June. Add to that the Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe in Paris in October, and then both the Breeders’ Cup and Melbourne Cup in November, and it is fair to say that 2026 looks like being another bumper year for horse racing fans.
