Six-time Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe winner Frankie Dettori thinks the prospect of drier ground at ParisLongchamp this year could bring Japanese-trained runners into the picture.

It is usually a given conditions in Paris on the first Sunday in October will be testing, but there have been instances when the ground has been unseasonably quick, including when Dettori was at his magnificent best on Golden Horn from stall 14 in 2015.

Japan as a nation has been chasing Arc glory since Speed Symboli finished down the field in 1969. Since then they have gone close with the likes of El Condor Pasa, Deep Impact and Orfevre.

“I’d say the ground we’ll have this year only happens once every 10 or 15 years,” Dettori – who enjoyed two of his wins with wonder mare Enable – told TalkSPORT. “When I won with Golden Horn it was pretty fast, but in general the ground gets really soft.

“It’s nice to see, because for years the Japanese have been trying to win it and they are not good at all on soft ground, so it will put them in the equation and make the race more interesting.”

Two-time winner

Cristian Demuro has twice won the great race – with Sottsass in 2020 and Ace Impact 2023 – and was on board the Yasuo Tomomichi-trained Admire Terra for a spin around the track on Tuesday.

“We just showed him the track because it was the horse’s first time here, just so he has seen it before Arc day,” he told Sky Sports Racing.

“Everything is going well, he galloped very good for me, we galloped just one mile and we asked him to gallop strong in the last stretch, he was very good.

“I was surprised because he showed a good balance on the track and I really was happy with him.

“I don’t think it would matter to him if it rains, he’s run on good ground and heavy ground so he can do both. I’m excited, it’s a race everybody wants to ride in and to have a horse to ride is really important.”

Solid credentials

Mikel Delzangles has never trained an Arc winner but believes his runner Alam, who has gone close in the French Derby and Grand Prix de Paris this season, has solid credentials.

“He did a good work yesterday and I was very happy with his race in the Prix Niel (second), he’s ready to go,” said Delzangles, who won the 2000 Guineas with Makfi in 2010.

“He behaved well, he did everything his jockey asked, we had a bad draw so had to be patient, but I was happy with his last straight line.

“He was not beaten far in the Grand Prix so he obviously does very well at Longchamp which is a good thing.

“I wouldn’t mind what the weather does, he’s won a Group 3 on soft ground and has run very well on fast ground.

“It should be Pierre-Charles Boudot on again, it’s exciting.”
