British EBF/Sir Henry Cecil Galtres Stakes (Group 3)

ONCE again, Ryan Moore proved himself to be riding at the very top of his game with a never-say-die effort on Ralph Beckett’s Haskoy to win the Listed Galtres Stakes after seeming to have a mountain to climb from an early stage on the easy-to-back 13/2 chance.

Haskoy was the least experienced in the field, having won a Wolverhampton novice on her only previous start, and she looked ill-at-ease on the fast turf through the early stages of this mile-and-a-half contest. Despite that, Moore managed to both nurse and cajole her through the contest, and while his task still looked hopeless early in the straight as Time Lock (Harry & Roger Charlton/Will Buick) kicked for home in the Juddmonte first colours, Moore switched to the inside rail – oddly shunned in this contest – and gradually began to make inroads.

It looked like the pair might be rewarded with a place a furlong out, with Time Lock hitting 1.06 in the run, but Haskoy was finally in full flight, and she forced her way to the front with yards to run to deny Time Lock by a neck, with Judith (John & Thady Gosden/Rab Havlin) a modest third.
