GAVIN Cromwell popped up in an unusual YouTube video this week. The trainer and plenty of his staff feature in an episode of Hood2Farm, a series created by British rapper Fekky, who has left behind his gangland background to promote farming in all its forms.

Fekky spent three days in Ireland in late November. Pat Martin, a key member of the Cromwell team, said: “He’s a very likeable fella and he got on very well with Gavin. He spent Friday in the yard and then went back to England on the Saturday to see his son fight in a professional bout - which he won - and then he came back on the Sunday for the Hatton’s Grace meeting at Fairyhouse.”

The visitor was fascinated to hear how Gavin had grown the yard from eight stables to over 150 and he was blown away to discover that Flooring Porter had been bought for €5,000 and has now won over €1 million.

According to Pat, Fekky was briefly interested in buying a horse himself, but perhaps he lost interest after asking Gavin ‘How do racehorse owners make money?’ The trainer answered: “Honestly? They don’t!”

Fekky took a particular liking to Now Is The Hour, but his bet on the horse in the Porterstown Chase failed to yield a dividend. Let’s hope he backed it again in the Thyestes.

The 50-minute video is worth a watch. It features plenty of familiar faces. The Ward Unions pop up at one point and even former Meath footballer Graham Geraghty makes an appearance.
