RACING media are always happy to promote fundraisers for injured riders and other good causes, and now the press find themselves getting behind one of their own who has had a dreadful year.

Former Daily Mail racing correspondent Marcus Townend was in a cycling accident almost exactly a year ago and suffered the first of three bleeds in his brain. He is still recuperating and will require ongoing neurophysiotherapy and much care from others to help him recover his independence.

Marcus (62) is a former president of the Horseracing Writers and Photographers Association [HWPA] and this year’s HWPA Derby Awards in London on December 7th will be combined with a fundraiser for Marcus. The lunch will include a silent auction and anyone who may have a suitable item for auction is invited to contact either David Cleary (hwpacontacts@gmail.com) or Bill Esdaile (bill@squareintheair.com). David can also supply details on how to secure tickets for the lunch and other ways in which businesses and organisations can show their support for Marcus.

In 2016, at the age of 52, Marcus raised thousands from a charity race at Windsor, having learned to ride in less than a year. It is now time to give something back to a special man.

His colleagues have set up a Just Giving page for those who wish to make a donation in support of Marcus.
