YOU never know what could happen at Bellewstown.
Barney Curley and Frankie Dettori have already put the Co Meath track on the world map. Last year the feature race at their July meeting was won by Petrol Head, who would later be withdrawn from the Galway Hurdle in controversial circumstances.
Bellewstown’s three-day July meeting starts next Thursday and this is where Europe’s champion two-year-old filly Millisle made a winning debut in 2019.
Incredibly the same race was won in 2020 by Pretty Gorgeous, who went on to win the Group 1 Fillies’ Mile at Newmarket. Thursday’s eight-race flat card starts at 4.15pm. Friday has a similar schedule, starting a little earlier at 4.05pm.
Friday is also ‘best dressed day’, sponsored by Tankardstown House, Co Meath, and there are prizes worth €4,000 to be won.
Saturday’s National Hunt card features the QuinnBet Bellewstown Hurdle. The €60,000 race will be the most valuable race ever run on the ‘Hill’ and the winner also gets a free entry into the Guinness Galway Hurdle “subject to some conditions”. The first race on Saturday is due off at 5pm.
