Horse: Merlyn’s Monty
Foaled: 1998
Breeder: J.A. Keogh
Sire: Montelimar
Dam: Aberedw
Trainer: Frances Crowley & Colm Murphy
Racing career: A half-brother to Grand National winner Hedgehunter, Merlyn’s Monty ran 11 times under Rules, winning a Tipperary bumper on debut and a Cork maiden hurdle.
Second career: Merlyn’s Monty has been a cherished part of Mary Lang’s life for many years. The horse was bred by her uncle and Mary has been by Monty’s side since he was a foal. Throughout his racing career, she cared for him at multiple stages, nursing him back to fitness.
When Monty retired from racing, Mary initially planned to find him a new home. However, due to a change in circumstances, he remained with her, and together they have enjoyed many joyful years with the Benbulben Riding Club.
Their partnership has shone in show jumping, hunter trials and dressage. Even at 28, Monty continues to enjoy his hacking.
