TRAINER Mick Winters was ordered to pay a €4,500 fine at an Appeals Body hearing on Wednesday evening.

The fine represents a 25% reduction on the original €6,000 penalty imposed on Winters after his horse Churchtown Glen was deemed not to have run on his merits when finishing seventh in a maiden hurdle at Cork earlier this month.

Jockey Barry John Foley was given a three-week ban for his efforts in the saddle and, having appealed the severity of the sentence, this was reduced to two weeks by the Appeals Committee.

The 90-day ban imposed on the horse remains.

A Turf Club spokesman explained: "The penalties for the trainer and jockey were reduced, taking into account the personal circumstances of both. The Appeals Body stressed that they regarded the breaches as seriously as the [raceday] stewards and only reduced the penalties because of the personal circumstances, not for any other reason."
