DONALD McCain, son of Red Rum’s trainer Ginger, must have experienced various emotions on Saturday. On the one hand, there was the victory of If The Cap Fits in the Ryanair Stayers Hurdle, with ecstatic owner Paul Rooney holding court before a packed press contingent.

Paul and Clare Rooney removed their horses from McCain’s stable a while back and although If The Cap Fits has always been with Harry Fry, there is little doubt that the Rooneys’ decision was a hammer blow for the trainer, who is fighting back but only very slowly.
