JUDGED on her form alone, the Willie Mullins-trained Paggane was not bad value at 100,000gns, the price paid for her at this week’s Tattersalls Online June Sale.
But when you look at her pedigree she just might be the best buy of the year.
Even though she is by the champion sprinter Muhaarar, the six-year-old has won hurdle races and chases over staying trips. However, her dam side is even more interesting. Most improbably she is a half-sister to California Dreamer who finished second in the Irish 1000 Guineas two weeks ago for Adrian Murray and the Amo Racing team.
Bloodstock agent Charles Shanahan snapped her up in the online sale this week. “She caught our eye in the sale, especially after California Dreamer placed in the Irish 1000 Guineas,” he said. “She has been bought for an existing partnership and we potentially will have some other partners coming into her. The plan is that she will stay in training.
“She will have the summer off and hopefully she will go to Cheltenham next year. We knew she would not be cheap, but she was around the money we thought she would make and we are very happy to secure her. She has run some very good races this year, and, no matter what happens, she will be a very valuable broodmare for the future.”
The mare was one of three lots consigned by Mullins. His draft also included Scottish Grand National runner-up Klarc Kent who was purchased for 28,000gns by Jacob Pritchard Webb with the aim of running in the Czech Republic’s prestigious cross-country contest, the Velká Pardubická.
Dan Astbury was amongst the most active bidders of the day purchasing two lots which included juvenile colt Unauthorized, who realised 88,000gns, and two-year-old colt Sir Aston who fetched 56,000gns, both consigned by Avenue Sales.
Breeze up session
The breeze-up session, now in its third year, saw 13 lots sold for an aggregate of 170,142gns. All lots breezed at Dundalk Stadium last week.
Silky Thoroughbred’s colt by leading first season sire Starman sold for 31,000gns to Sean Grassick Bloodstock before Derek Passant snapped up the Micky Cleeere-consigned colt by US sire Maclean’s Music for 33,000gns.
The entire sale realised turnover of 907,542gns for 72 lots sold, at an average price of 12,605gns.
Unsold lots remain available through the Tattersalls Online website.
The next Tattersalls Online auction will be the Online June Pop-Up Sale next Thursday, June 12th featuring debut winning two-year-old and Royal Ascot hopeful Miss Yechance. Wildcard entries will be accepted until Monday.
