THEY might have to put up a statue of Sioux Nation at Tattersalls Ireland following this week’s breeze-up sale.

A daughter of the Coolmore sire topped the 2024 breeze-up sale at Fairyhouse at €370,000. Named City Of Memphis, she recently made an impressive winning debut for trainer Paddy Twomey.

The third top-priced lot last year was another Sioux Nation filly who joined Simon and Ed Crisford after selling for €270,000. She was named Coto De Caza and won the Group 3 Cornwallis Stakes.

Go back to 2023 when Paddy Twomey also got one of the top lots at this sale, yet another Sioux Nation filly. This one cost €240,000 and, named Letsbefrankaboutit, she won the Group 3 Round Tower Stakes at the Curragh. It’s no wonder there are 18 two-year-olds by Sioux Nation in the 2025 catalogue.

Including wildcards, there are 270 horses engaged, about the same as last year. They will breeze at Fairyhouse on Thursday (May 22nd) from 8.30am and selling starts from 10am on Friday.

Last year’s sale produced a clearance rate of almost 90%, higher than any other European breeze-up sale, and the Tattersalls Ireland team has every right to be optimistic, given the success of its graduates and the success of all this year’s breeze up sales to-date.

The catalogue features siblings to a number of stakes winners and performers including a St Mark’s Basilica half-brother to dual Group 1 winner Limato.

Paddy Twomey will surely take a second look at Lot 27, a Cotai Glory half-sister to his classic-placed Purple Lily, which he also sourced at this sale.

There’s an Alkumait half-brother to Group 1 Caulfield Cup winner Deny Knowledge (Lot 228) and other well-related siblings include a No Nay Never half-brother to Group 2 Prix du Muguet winner Duhail (Lot 206), and a Kodi Bear own-brother to Epsom Oaks runner-up Mystery Angel (Lot 8).

Lot 187 is a Medaglio D’Oro colt out of a half-sister to multiple US Group 1 winner Improbable and Lot 226 is a Wootton Bassett colt out of an own-sister to listed winner Albaraah.

A Kameko filly out of a winning own-sister to smart stayer Nayef Road is offered as Lot 15 and Lot 182 is another Wootton Bassett colt out of a listed winner and own-sister to Group 2 winner Gustav Klimt and Group 3 winner Wonderfully.

Another well-bred filly is Lot 135, a daughter of Wootton Bassett out of a winning own-sister to three-time Group 1 winner Alice Springs.

Stock by Night Of Thunder have been all the rage. He’s got two colts in the catalogue, including Lot 38, who is out of a winning own sister to US Group 1 winner Digital Age.

The 22 wildcards also include a Sioux Nation filly from Charlie and Francesca Poste’s Station Yard; he is a half-brother to six winners.

Katie Walsh’s Greenhills Farm has made three additional entries, among them, a filly by Havana Grey who is out of a half-sister to the listed winner Rosa Grace. The same vendor has added a colt and filly by No Nay Never.

Thomond O’Mara’s Knockanglass Stables has added a son of American Pharoah whose dam is a half-sister to a Grade 3 winner in the US, and a Showcasing colt who is closely related to the Listed Redcar Two-Year-Old Trophy winner Ventura Mist.

Kildallan Farm has added a son of Cotai Glory out of a Group 3 winner, and a Mehmas filly whose dam is a half-sister to Group 3 winner Mr Singh.

Lacka House bringing strong track record to the table

RYAN Conran and Pamela O’Rourke of Lacka House Stables in Fethard, Co Tipperary, had a rollercoaster of a day last Sunday week.

They had bought and sold Shes Perfect, first past the post in the Poule d’Essai des Pouliches at ParisLongchamp. The Sioux Nation filly, sold for €50,000 at this sale last year, was demoted to second place by the French stewards, a decision which has been appealed by connections.

Regardless of the demotion, the filly has shown herself to be top class and is another feather in the cap for Lacka House. From just a handful of breeze-up horses sold in the past two years, they have produced last year’s Group 3 winner Coto De Caza and the group-placed Ecureuil Secret.

Coto De Caza, consigned on behalf of breeder Matty Tynan, was sold for €270,000 at last year’s Tattersalls Ireland Breeze Up Sale. Another filly by Sioux Nation, she was sent to Simon and Ed Crisford and was out just over a month after her sale, finishing a close third on her debut.

She won a few weeks later and then won again at Glorious Goodwood before ending her season by winning the Group 3 Cornwallis Stakes at Newmarket. She has a Group 1 entry at Royal Ascot next month.

Ryan and Pamela have had a good sales season so far, selling an Invincible Spirit colt for 120,000gns at the Craven Sale and a Sioux Nation filly in France for €140,000.

“We’re doing okay,” Ryan told us in an understated way. “We only branched out on our own during Covid. Before that I was selling horses through Shanaville Stables and with my uncle Thomond O’Mara (Knockanglass).”

Lacka House just sends two horses to Fairyhouse this week but they are both worth following into the ring.

Lot 214: B.F. by Nando Parrado out of Spring To Mind (Archipenko)

“Her sire has made a good start with his first runners. This filly has been very straight-forward, has a good mind, and shows pace. We’re fond of her and she seems ready to go.”

Lot 243: B.F. by Sioux Nation out of Volcanic Lady (Invincible Spirit)

“She reminds me of the good Sioux Nation fillies we have had in the past – tough, genuine and with a bit of class. They want to please and they are not ground-dependent. This one has been easy to deal with. She could start over six furlongs and get a mile next year.”
