BORDER Counties staged a Riding Club one-day event last Sunday at Cloncaw Equestrian where there was a disappointing entry but those who competed very much enjoyed the experience and the weather.

The highest-graded class was the Advanced Intermediate which was won by home-based Johnathan Bellew riding his sister Caroline McQuillan’s Irish Sport Horse gelding Foxtail Orchid (29.31), a 12-year-old by Porsch. The Border Counties safety officer led the 12-strong section after dressage (26.11) and, despite picking up a small number of cross-country time penalties, held off the challenge of Meath’s Barry Magan who completed on his flat work mark with Itwassntme (31.11).
