THE Murray Baker and Andrew Foresman stable were busy on both sides of the Tasman Sea on Saturday, saddling up three stakes-race winners on Saturday.

At Ellerslie, the stable delivered the Coolmore stallion Camelot’s first southern hemisphere stakes winner when the Australian-bred gelding Lord Arthur ran out a two-length winner of the Group 2 Valachi Downs Championship Stakes over 2,100 metres.

Offered at Karaka’s 2017 Pemier Sale, Lord Arthur was passed in on a reserve of NZ$110,000 despite being a half-brother to a triple Group 1-winning mare.

“That was very impressive,” said co-trainer Murray Baker. “He’s a half to Bonneval but he has been a little bit immature. We’ve spaced his races and given him plenty of time. I gave him a stayer’s show today with plenty of pace on. He showed good acceleration.”

Earlier on the Ellerslie card, the stable won the Listed Champagne Stakes for two-year-olds over 1,600 metres with the So You Think colt Quick Thinker.

A De Burgh Equine A$100,000 buy of from the Coolmore draft at the Australian Easter Yearling, Quick Thinker’s win helped the Baker/Foresman stable set a record for the most victories at stakes level in a New Zealand season, with Lord Arthur taking that tally to 22. “He might be a middle-distance horse in the spring where we might get him to Melbourne or something like that,” added Baker of Quick Thinker.

In Sydney the stable landed the Group 3 Frank Packer Plate over 2,000 metres with the Savabeel colt The Chosen One who was fourth in the Australian Derby on his previous start.

“He has been up a long time, but he keeps improving,” said Andrew Forsman, indicating the colt would now be spelled with a view towards the spring. “He’s a quality-bred colt, just maturing at the right time. It was great to see him get his just desserts today.”

Home by a length and half, the win was The Chosen One’s fourth form 11 having been passed in on a reserve of NZ$150,000 at the 2017 New Zealand Premier Yearling Sale.
