IMPROVING steadily in each of his four seasons in training, Slade Power won a maiden race at two, two listed events at three years of age, a Group 2 sprint at four and was a Group 1 winner at Royal Ascot and Newmarket as a five-year-old, when he earned the title of champion older sprinter in Europe.
Retired to Kildangan Stud in 2015, Slade Power has sired 94 foals in his first crop, so he must have a sporting chance of being the leading first crop sire in 2018. At the recent Newmarket December Sales Glenvale Stud paid 150,000gns to Norelands Stud for their bay colt foal out of Silk Trail, while the son of Electra Star sold for 78,000gns.
First and second in his only two starts as a two-year-old, Slade Power scored three times the next season, including the Listed Belgrave Stakes at Fairyhouse and the Listed Sandy Lane Stakes at Haydock Park, in which he defeated the Group 1 winner Lethal Force. There were three more victories for him in 2013, scoring in the Group 3 Phoenix Sprint Stakes and the Group 3 Sapphire Stakes, both at the Curragh, before producing a top-class performance to add the Group 2 British Champions Sprint Stakes at Ascot in October.
Slade Power was even better in 2014 and he was named the champion older sprinter in Europe that season, starting the year with a two-length success in the Group 3 Greenlands Stakes at the Curragh. Next came a comfortable win over Due Diligence in the Group 1 Diamond Jubilee Stakes at Royal Ascot in a very fast time, before he completed his hat trick in the Group 1 Darley July Cup at Newmarket, again a length and a half clear of a large field of sprinting stars.
Coming from the very speedy male line of Machiavellian, Slade Power is the best son of Dutch Art, winner of the Group 1 Prix Morny and Group 1 Middle Park Stakes and already sire of 26 individual stakes winners. Slade Power’s pedigree is very much an outcross for most mares, as his dam Girl Power is a winning daughter of Key Of Luck out of a Marju mare from an American family which has also produced the Grade 1 Hollywood Derby star Slew The Dragon. Trainers will surely be very active trying to acquire his stock this autumn.
