ALTHOUGH a large number of sons of the great Danzig (by Northern Dancer) got at least one Group/Grade 1 winner at stud, only two have forged their own branch of his line: Green Desert and Danehill.

Kingston Hill represents the latter. An unbeaten Group 1 winner at two and a Derby-placed classic star at three, the first-crop son of multiple Group 1 ace Mastercraftsman (by Danehill Dancer) joins his sire at Coolmore Stud.

He is out of Group 3 Prix de Flore winner Audacieuse (by Rainbow Quest) and his half-sister Ile Deserte (by Green Desert) is the dam of the Group 2 Coventry Stakes third St Barths (by Cadeaux Genereux), one of several in the family with notable two-year-old form.

His grandam Sarah Georgina (by Persian Bold) won at two, and in addition to Audacieuse, her stakes-winning son Lord Jim (by Kahyasi) and his half-brother Group 3 Acomb Stakes winner and Group 2 Champagne Stakes third Waiter’s Dream (by Oasis Dream), she is also notable as being the grandam of Reduit (by Lion Cavern) who was runner-up in the Group 1 Criterium de Saint-Cloud.

Third dam Dance By Night (by Northfields), who won twice at the age of two, gave us the Group 1 Poule d’Essai des Pouliches (French 1000 Guineas) and Group 1 Prix de la Foret heroine Danseuse Du Soir (by Thatching) and she is the grandam of the Group 1 Gran Criterium scorer Scintillo (by Fantastic Light), Italy’s top-rated juvenile of 2007.

Many will also remember Scintillo’s half-brother Jumbajukiba (by Barathea), the prolific gelding whose pattern wins included the Group 3 Gladness Stakes and two editions of the Group 3 Solonaway Stakes.

Sarah Georgina is also a half-sister to the dual listed scorer Dana Springs (by Aragon), to the Group 2-placed stakes winner Don Corleone (by Caerleon), to Group 1 Prix du Jockey-Club (French Derby) third Circus Dance (by Sadler’s Wells) and to Danseuse Du Nord (by Kahyasi), the Group 2 Prix de Mallaret third whose blacktype descendants include the Grade 1-placed multiple US Grade 3 scorer Danzon (by Royal Academy).

In the fourth generation you will find the classic-placed Italian filly Aria Di Festa (by Orpen), her Group 2-placed dual stakes-winning daughter Mixed Intention (by Elusive City), and various other blacktype horses.

Kingston Hill’s St Leger victory showed that he stayed a bit further than might have been expected given the amount of precocity and seven to 10-furlong talent in his family.

His own two-year-old form, combined with being a Mastercraftsman half-brother to the dam of a Royal Ascot two-year-old, suggests that, with the right mares, he might even get juveniles that show more precocity than he did.
