A CHAMPION in both his seasons on the racecourse, Gleneagles made an excellent start as a stallion with his first runners in 2019. He was third on the list of leading first-crop sires in Europe in financial terms with €645,680, and fourth by number of winners with 24, who won 31 races.

His son Royal Lytham won the Group 2 July Stakes at Newmarket and was third in the Group 1 Phoenix Stakes, while Royal Dornoch was also a Group 2 star at Newmarket, scoring in the Royal Lodge Stakes, and finished third in the Group 2 Richmond Stakes. Earlier, Southern Hills had taken the Listed Windsor Castle Stakes at Royal Ascot, while four more of his youngsters were blacktype placed.

Not surprisingly, yearlings by Gleneagles were very popular last autumn, with a top price of 400,000gns and 16 others selling for €100,000 or more.

After scoring at the Curragh early in his two-year-old campaign, Gleneagles won the Group 3 Tyros Stakes at Leopardstown. He then returned to the Curragh for a victory in the Group 2 Futurity Stakes, before his first Group 1 success in the National Stakes by a length and a half from Toscanini. He ended that first season in the Group 1 Prix Jean-Luc Lagardere at Longchamp on Arc day, where he was first past the post, but controversially was judged to have interfered with Full Mast and Territories and was moved back to third.

Gleneagles was the champion three-year-old miler in Europe in 2015, starting by taking his revenge on Territories when beating him by over two lengths first time out in the Group 1 2000 Guineas at Newmarket, with Ivawood third of the 18 runners.

Then at the Curragh came another comfortable success for Gleneagles in the Group 1 Irish 2000 Guineas, ahead of Endless Drama, Ivawood and Belardo. He was successful at Royal Ascot in the Group 1 St James’s Palace Stakes, coming home well clear of Consort and Make Believe.

One of the best sons of his sire, Gleneagles is one of five consecutive group winners, all by Galileo, from his dam You’resothrilliung, a daughter of Storm Cat who won the Group 2 Cherry Hinton Stakes at Newmarket. His sister Marvellous won the Irish 1000 Guineas, while Happily was a double Group 1 star.

You’resothrilling is an own-sister to the brilliant Giant’s Causeway, whose wins included the Irish Champion Stakes, the Juddmonte International and the Eclipse Stakes, before becoming a champion sire.
