A CLASSIC winner would be quite appropriate for Dawn Approach in 2020, as four of his sons and daughters from his first two crops have already been placed at that high level.

Madhmoon was second in the Epsom Derby and scored in the Group 2 Golden Fleece Stakes and the Group 3 Desmond Stakes, while Musis Amica ran second in both the Prix de Diane and Prix Vermeille, after winning the Group 3 Prix de la Grotte. Then listed victress Mary Tudor was third in the Irish Oaks and Dawn Patrol took second place in the New Zealand 2000 Guineas.

Dawn Approach was an unbeaten champion two-year-old and a champion miler the following season, with the Group 1 Newmarket 2000 Guineas among his victories; so his success at stud comes as no surprise. His first three crops include some 84 individual winners of almost 150 races and over £3,000,000 in prize money, with 11 blacktype winners.

The handsome chesnut Dawn Approach raced six times as a two-year-old, winning comfortably every time. Trained by Jim Bolger, he started with wins at the Curragh and Naas, then added the Listed Rochestown Stakes in June.

Next came a trip to Royal Ascot, where he defeated Olympic Glory in the Group 2 Coventry Stakes. Purchased by Godolphin, he came home almost five lengths clear in the Group 1 National Stakes at the Curragh, before winning the Group 1 Dewhurst Stakes at Newmarket by almost three lengths. On the European Rankings, Dawn Approach was six pounds clear of his nearest rival for the title of champion two-year-old.

There was a similar start to Dawn Approach’s second season in 2013, going straight to Newmarket for the 2000 Guineas and strolling home five lengths ahead of his rivals. Though hot favourite for the Epsom Derby, the extra half mile was too far, but he soon returned to win the Group 1 St James’s Palace Stakes at Royal Ascot.

Timeform rated Dawn Approach 132 in their Racehorses of 2013, even higher than the 126 which made him their top juvenile of 2012.

Dawn Approach’s full-brother Herald Of The Dawn scored in the Group 2 Futurity Stakes at the Curragh in 2015 and ran second in the Group 1 National Stakes. They are both by Epsom Derby hero New Approach and their dam Hymn Of The Dawn is a daughter of the American sire Phone Trick.
