A TOP international miler, Aussie Rules won in four different countries, with Group 1 triumphs in France and the USA and three other placings in Group 1 events.

Now standing at Lanwades Stud, he is already sire of 18 blacktype winners in both hemispheres, including Group 1 star Fiesolana.

Retired to stud at Coolmore in 2007, Aussie Rules has sired over 200 individual winners in his first six seasons, including the brilliant fillies Fiesolana who scored in the Group 1 Matron Stakes and four other group races, and Djumama, winner of the German 1000 Guineas and second in the Group 1 German Oaks.

Aussie Rules scored first time out at two at the Curragh; then at Goodwood he was fourth to Epsom Derby hero Sir Percy in the Group 2 Vintage Stakes and second in the Group 3 Round Tower Stakes, before winning the Group 3 Somerville Tattersall Stakes at Newmarket.

Making dramatic progress during the winter, Aussie Rules was sent by Aidan O’Brien in May for the Group 1 Poule d’Essai des Poulains which he won by half a length, with French champion miler Stormy River third. He produced even greater finishing speed in the Grade 1 Shadwell Turf Mile Stakes at Keeneland that autumn, winning this $600,000 contest by a length and three quarters, while fourth was Miesque’s Approval who won the Grade 1 Breeders’ Cup Mile a month later. In between, Aussie Rules ran fourth in the Group 1 Coral Eclipse Stakes, the Group 1 Sussex Stakes and the Group 1 Prix du Moulin.

In the World Thoroughbred Rankings Aussie Rules was awarded a rating of 117, second only to George Washington among the three-year-old milers trained in Ireland and also one of the four best milers of that age in Europe. Timeform’s Racehorses of 2006 assessed him even higher, on 123.

A son of champion sprinter and multiple leading sire Danehill, Aussie Rules has inherited his grey colour from his dam Last Second, the third highest rated three-year-old filly in England in 1996 when she won the Nassau Stakes at Goodwood and Sun Chariot Stakes at Newmarket. A daughter of Alzao, Last Second is dam of nine winners including Approach, a listed scorer at Newbury and dam of Group 2 winner Midas Touch who was second in the Irish Derby.
