RATED higher than his very successful sire Invincible Spirit, Profitable scored at both two and three years before developing into one of the most exciting sprinters of the last two seasons, with a Group 1 victory at Royal Ascot to his credit. He is starting a new career at Kildangan Stud in 2018 and, with a pedigree free of both Sadler’s Wells and Danehill, he looks like an ideal stallion for Irish breeders.

Trained by Clive Cox, Profitable scored at Sandown Park as a two-year-old and was second in four of his other five starts. He improved rapidly the next year to win the Listed Westow Stakes at York over five furlongs and pick up prize money in the Group 1 Commonwealth Stakes at Royal Ascot.

Profitable went from strength to strength as a four-year-old, beginning that season with three consecutive group wins. He started with the Group 3 Palace House Stakes at Newmarket, coming home half a length clear of Jungle Cat with Sole Power unplaced in a huge field of 21 runners, then added the Group 2 Temple Stakes at Haydock Park, in which he held off the dual Nunthorpe Stakes heroine Mecca’s Angel by a neck.

Profitable duly completed a remarkable hat-trick in the Group 1 King’s Stand Stakes at Royal Ascot, scoring bravely by a neck from Cotai Glory, with Mecca’s Angel further back, and he was then a close fourth to Limato in the Group 1 Darley July Cup, ending the season with a Timeform rating of 125.

Just before Royal Ascot it was announced that Godolphin had purchased Profitable as a stallion prospect and he carried their colours as a five-year-old in 2017. His best effort was again in the Group 1 King’s Stand Stakes where he was second to the flying American filly Lady Aurelia, and he was also second to Battaash in the Group 2 King George Stakes at Goodwood and third to him in the Group 1 Prix de l’Abbaye.

Profitable’s sire Invincible Spirit was also a top sprinter and that son of Green Desert has sired over 100 blacktype winners, 15 of them at Group 1 level, including Kingman and Moonlight Cloud.

Dani Ridge, the dam of Profitable, is a daughter of Indian Ridge who won three races and has bred eight other winners, among them Ridge Ranger, a filly who scored in the Group 3 Summer Stakes at York. The next dam, Daniella Drive, was bred in the USA, where she won 12 races.
