Sir, - I wish to express my admiration for the remarkable work that Cathal Beale and his team have done during his tenure as CEO of the Irish National Stud.
I was reminded of this recently when I visited with my wife and two daughters.
With so many fond memories of time spent at the stud with my family, especially my grandmother Kitty, during my childhood, it was wonderful to see it thriving and being embraced by a new generation. The connection between the INS and the local community feels stronger than ever, and that is a testament to the culture and accessibility that Cathal and his team have fostered.
Although it is unquestionably an appealing destination for international visitors, it is this connection with the local community that makes it so special. It is not just another pit stop on the tourist trail; it goes far beyond that.
As it has been around for so long, I think the INS can sometimes be taken for granted, but there is nothing else quite like it anywhere in the world. Somehow, it manages to cater equally to the racing and breeding expert, the casual fan, and people with zero interest in horses at all who simply want a peaceful walk, a coffee, and somewhere enjoyable to spend a few hours with their children.
That broad appeal is not accidental; it is the result of deliberate leadership and a clear understanding of what a modern national institution should be. I’d imagine it also helps diversify the stud’s revenue base beyond the search for the next Invincible Spirit.
Under Cathal’s stewardship, the INS has remained both commercially successful and culturally important.
When the time comes, the next major challenge will be finding someone with the same vision, passion, and capability to continue that work. That will not be an easy task.
Long may the Irish National Stud continue to thrive, and long may the Irish government appreciate and protect one of its greatest national assets.
- Yours etc.,
