A REFRESHING and informative guide to the way the horse moves is presented in the revised edition of Susan E. Harris’s comprehensive book Horse Gaits, Balance, and Movement.

Acclaimed USA equestrian coach George Morris provides a glowing foreword to this well-illustrated work, covering almost 300-pages in which Harris covers anatomy, movement, balance, conformation and riding, across all disciplines.

New Yorker Harris, who conducts her Centered Riding and Anatomy in Motion clinics around the world, draws on a lifetime of vast experience to present the reader with a highly informative work which is of value to all levels, from the leisure rider right up to seasoned professionals.

Major sections of the book explain basic equine anatomy and the horse’s natural movement cycle, covering gaits and transitions. Aided by illustrations galore, Harris comes into her own when describing balance and movement, flexion, bending, straightness and lateral movements while much can be taken from her chapters covering faulty movement.

Readers are also given a strong insight into conformation; its effect on movement and the author also explores the impact of shoeing on the horse’s movement, again greatly aided by the illustrations and sketches.

Concluding chapters concentrate on the effect of the rider on how the horse moves and how riders can achieve the best movement from their mounts.

First published in the USA by Turner Publishing Company last year, the revised edition has been published in 2017 by Souvenir Press Ltd in London (stg £20 cover price).
