THERE was widespread shock and profound sadness in the Irish equestrian community and beyond at the tragic death of true horseman and family man Tom O’Dwyer, Co Kilkenny, in a freak equestrian accident yesterday morning.

Well known in equestrian circles as a true horseman, a keen hunting enthusiast, as well as one of life’s gentlemen, Mr O’Dwyer (56) received a fatal kick from a horse being ridden on the road.

It’s believed that he was trying to encourage the horse to go past roadworks from behind when it kicked out and caught him in the chest.

Emergency services, including ambulances, Gardaí and a helicopter, rushed to the scene near the family’s Cappagh home to help and he was removed to hospital but, sadly, could not be saved.

His death has come as a terrible shock to his family, relatives and many friends and the thoughts of everyone are with them at this time.

A former joint-master of the Tipperary Foxhounds, Tom was also a stallion man and often judged at FEHL events where his input was greatly valued and his vast knowledge of all things equine very much appreciated by all those around him.

His love and skill with horses was very much passed down to his talented daughter Emma, who came up through the show jumping pony ranks to international level, competing with much success at home and abroad.

Funeral arrangements will be known over the coming days.

Gardaí are investigating all the circumstances of the tragic accident. A spokesperson for the Health and Safety Authority also confirmed: “We are aware of this tragic incident and are examining all the circumstances involved.”
