DAMIEN Griffin and Wrenwood Stables' Pembrook Milenia claimed victory at the National Grand Prix, sponsored by The Underwriting Exchange, at Cavan Equestrian Centre.

By Diamant de Semilly out of a Lux Z mare named Pembrook Lisalea, last weekend's victory was the nine-year-old mare's second recent Grand Prix win having taken the top spot in the 1.35m at Galway Equestrian Centre just two weeks ago.

Pembrook Milenia was bred by Joanne and Finbar Mullingan in Kilmashogue Stud, Co Wicklow.

“I’m delighted with the win. I’ve had her (Pembrook Milenia) for just about a year now. Dan Walsh and Stacey Babes gave me the ride of her last July after I lost the ride of Tabby and had nothing for the Grand Prix classes," Griffin said.

“They want to hold onto her to take embryos from her in a couple of years so fortunately I got the ride on her.

“She’s by Diamant de Semilly so she’s got plenty of blood and is a bit firey so it took me a while to get used to her, and her to me, but that is what makes her so careful.

“My plan is to do a few more 1.35m classes with her. She doesn’t have a huge amount of mileage for a horse of her age so I’ll let her get a bit more at 1.40m and then hopefully by the time Cork summer show and Tattersalls come around, she will be ready to move up to the New Heights classes. That would be my plan anyway so hopefully it works out that way,” said Griffin following the win.

A total of 33 starters lined out for the fourth round of The Underwriting Exchange 1.40m and just nine combinations made it through to the jump-off.

Thomas O’Brien and Miss Darco were pathfinders in the timed decider. They faulted at the first part of the double and then added eight more faults towards the end of the track to finish on 12 faults in a time of 41.72 for eventual eighth place.

Young rider Kate Derwin was second in aboard Luidam de la Cruise (Luidam x Cruising) they delivered a fault-free round in a time of 52.56 which would see them claim sixth place as well as the leading young rider prize.

Tim MacDonagh and Hollypark Galloway really made things interesting when they laid down a clear round in a fast time of 39.77, this would be good enough for the runner-up spot in the final line-up.

Barcelona, ridden by Harry Marshall, was next in. They recorded a time of 42.90 but with four faults to add, collected at the second part of the double.

Jamie Landers and Moira Forbes' Valtor de Blagny managed to leave all the fences intact in 43.51 which would slot them into fifth place.

Griffin was sixth to go. He steered Pembrook Milenia to a foot-perfect clear and managed to slice 0.25 off MacDonagh’s time in 39.52 to secure the victory.

Jessica Burke and Gabriel Slattery’s Castlelawn Captain Junior then posted another clear round as the seventh pair in. They stopped the clock at 41.52 for fourth place.

Jasmine Tide (Kroongraff x Ard VDL Douglas) and Donegal native Simon Scott then matched Burke’s clear but in a faster time of 40.57 to slot into third. Last to go, Louis Gates Hardiman riding Erasmus vd Heffinick collected 12 faults in a 71.79 to claim ninth place.

The next and fifth round of The Underwriting Exchange League takes place in Ballinasloe today (Saturday).
