CHESHAM STAKES
(LISTED)
ANOTHER excellent day for Ballydoyle started with success for September in the Listed Chesham Stakes.
Beautifully bred, by Japanese star Deep Impact out of Danehill’s daughter Peeping Fawn, winner of four Group 1s for the stable including the Irish Oaks, September had already won over seven furlongs on her Leopardstown debut and was made 11/8 favourite to follow up.
She did it the hard way, missing the kick and taking a minor bump as she exited the stalls but Ryan Moore always looks supremely confident on the yard’s juveniles and took his time about moving up to challenge the leaders.
Mark Johnston’s Nyaleti, successful on her debut over six furlongs only six days before, went off at an impressive lick, keeping up the gallop as the Godolphin colt Masar joined issue.
FIGHTING IT OUT
They were fighting it out when September, finding her rhythm from half-way, went right through with her effort and swept past, beating the rallying Nyaleti by just over two lengths, with Masar a short-head behind.
“I’m delighted with her,” O’Brien said. “She’s bred absolutely in the purple, has a massive engine, is a good traveller and can quicken up really well. She’s not very big but she thinks she is and has a big personality and big presence. She could take in the Debutante on the way to the Moyglare and will stay much further next year.”
This was the trainer’s 60th Royal Ascot victory – soon to become 61 – and his fourth Chesham, bringing him level with Paul Cole.
September was generally quoted at either 5/1 or 6/1 for the Qipco 1000 Guineas, with a couple of firms going 10/1 for the Investec Oaks.
