THE period between the end of Glorious Goodwood and the start of next week’s Ebor meeting at York is pretty uneventful in Britain.

There were two Group 3s last Saturday, with Teodoro landing the Rose of Lancaster Stakes at Haydock with a 114 timefigure and Main Edition taking the Sweet Solera Stakes at Newmarket’s July course with a timefigure of 110.

The latter has the Mark Johnston-trained filly second only to Pretty Pollyanna (116) among juvenile fillies so far this campaign, though Comedy (108), Natalie’s Joy (107) and Signora Cabello (107) are among those snapping at her heels. At a slightly lower level, the following two-year-olds ran useful timefigures which may be a stepping stone to bigger things: Magnetic Charm (95, Newbury), Dutch Treat (94, Yarmouth), Blyton (96, Haydock), Good Luck Fox (102, Sandown), Too Darn Hot (92, Sandown) and Kuwait Currency (97, Lingfield).

OVERSHADOWED

That seven-length debut win by Too Darn Hot – a John Gosden-trained son of Dubawi and Dar Re Mi – caused quite a stir, though the likelihood is that he had little to beat on the day; his overall time was overshadowed on the same card not only by Good Luck Fox but by the older filly Belle Meade (107). The Shergar Cup at Ascot featured some widely varying pace profiles – perhaps a testament to the difficulty in judging such matters when unfamiliar with this course – but not many especially good winning times.

Best of the lot was Tis Marvellous’ 111 timefigure in the opening Shergar Cup Dash, followed by Berkshire Blues’ 104 in the Shergar Cup Classic and Genetics’ 96 when winning the Shergar Cup Challenge Handicap by fully 12 lengths.

Unforgetable Filly did not win by quite so far over at Haydock, but a margin of eight lengths at an extended mile is impressive, especially in a listed race. Her timefigure of 104 suggests a degree of caution about the form, in a race in which several underperformed, may be justified.
