Tipperary races move

FOLLOWING the cancellation of Tipperary’s Thursday card this week due to waterlogging, both the Abergwaun Stakes and Fairy Bridge Stakes have been rescheduled. The Abergwuan, a listed five-furlong contest, has been added to today’s card at Navan while the seven-and-a-half-furlong Group 3 Coolmore No Nay Never Fairy Bridge Stakes will be run at Gowran Park on Wednesday.

Even So success

PAUL Shanahan has won the Connolly’s Red Mills/The Irish Field Breeder of the Month competition for July. Under the Lynch Bages banner, he bred Juddmonte Irish Oaks winner Even So, a daughter of Camelot out of the Danehill mare Breeze Hill.

Mohaather retired

SUSSEX Stakes winner Mohaather was retired this week after “significant bone bruising” was discovered in his near hind fetlock. Hamdan Al Maktoum’s racing manager Angus Gold said: “Precautionary x-rays were taken over the weekend which have revealed significant bone bruising in his near hind fetlock joint; unfortunately this will put paid to the rest of his campaign, and as a result Sheikh Hamdan has taken the decision to retire the colt to stud.”

A son of Showcasing (by Oasis Dream), Mohaather won twice from three runs as a two-year-old but only raced twice at three, winning the Greenham Stakes before a setback ruled him out until the Queen Elizabeth II Stakes in which he finished fifth. A return to that contest was on the cards after his brilliant performance at Goodwood, where he quickened past a multiple Group 1 winners to win emphatically.

Sands Of Mali to stand at Ballyhane Stud

THE Group 1-winning sprinter Sands Of Mali has been retired and will stand at Ballyhane Stud. “We’re delighted to announce we’ve bought Sands Of Mali to join the roster here at Ballyhane,” said Ballyhane owner Joe Foley. “He impressed me hugely at York the day he blitzed the field in the Gimcrack and I’ve been on his trail ever since. I know how highly Richard Fahey rated the horse from day one, so I’m thrilled to have acquired such a talented Group 1 racehorse for the farm.”

The son of American-bred sire Panis won five of his 18 starts, twice at two and three times at three, when he took the Group 1 British Champions Sprint.

Flemensfirth retired

LEADING National Hunt stallion Flemensfirth has been retired at the age of 28. Standing for Coolmore at The Beeches Stud in Co Waterford, Flemensfirth was hugely popular with National Hunt breeders, regularly producing crops of more than 200. Lostintranslation, Waiting Patiently, Topofthegame, Flemenstar and Imperial Commander are just some of his best progeny.

The son of Alleged should be represented on the track for years to come and just last week a daughter and son made €155,000 and €150,000 at the Derby Sale.
