MOYGLARE STUD STAKES
(GROUP 1)
CURSORY Glance put the seal on a memorable weekend for Roger Varian and Andrea Atzeni as she claimed the Moyglare Stud Stakes to leave connections looking forward to a classic campaign in 2015.
Successful in Royal Ascot’s Albany Stakes, the daughter of Distorted Humor came here off a superb second to Tiggy Wiggy in York’s Lowther Stakes and that effort gave her compelling claims.
With the step up to seven furlongs for the first time promising to hold no fears for Cursory Glance she was returned the 11/8 favourite and she became the third consecutive English-trained filly to win this race.
At the halfway point of this race Cursory Glance came under pressure and it looked as though she might be in some trouble. Almost immediately though she responded to Atzeni’s urgings and she improved to hold every chance heading into the last quarter of a mile.
The Merry Fox Stud-owned daughter of Distorted Humor then led with over a furlong to run and she looked to hold the upper hand at this stage.
Cursory Glance did need the line late on though as the Debutante Stakes second Lucida stormed home to close to within a neck.
Half a length back in third was Found who ran a fine race on just her second career outing. She still looked quite inexperienced at a vital stage of the race and she remains a filly with a fine future.
“It’s been a very good weekend and she is highly talented,” stated a pleased Varian who landed a first English classic with Kingston Hill the previous afternoon.
“Andrea just felt that she was racing a little lazily through the race and he gave her a squeeze and she came alive and then found herself in front too soon.”
“This run will have taught her plenty and she’s already shown that she has lots of speed and she got this trip well. I’ll see how she comes out of this before making plans but she has a big year ahead of her next year and she is a Group 1 winner so we might leave her off until next year.”
