CABLE Bay may be the horse to take from the Lockinge Stakes last Saturday.

Charlie Hills’ horse was held up through the early stages by Jamie Spencer, presumably because of fears about his ability to last a mile.

The only time he ventured beyond seven furlongs before in his life, in the Group 2 Joel Stakes at Newmarket last September, he was well beaten.

However, as it happened in Saturday’s race, it was not an advantage to be held up.

The prominent racers dominated. Night Of Thunder, Toormore, Arod and Integral, first, second, third and fourth home respectively.

Indeed, they raced in second, third, fourth and fifth places respectively from early. It was a prominent racer’s race, and Cable Bay did best of those horses who were held up.

He seemed to see out the mile well, and that opens up options for him.

Runner-up in the Dewhurst as a juvenile, he had a fairly indifferent three-year-old season, but he shaped really encouragingly on his debut this season at the Curragh and this was another step forward.

The Invincible Spirit colt may still be at his absolute best over seven furlongs and on easy ground.

He does have an entry in the Queen Anne at Royal Ascot, and he would be an interesting outsider if he took his chance in that.
