ALMOST every point-to-point handler has a horse which has passed through their hands and gone on to better things. This gives the buyer confidence that they can produce the right type of horse to train on and get to the top. A track record as it were.

Few if any can match the record Andy Slattery has. On the flat he is responsible for a Royal Ascot winner in Judge The Moment along with group and listed winners in France. Recently, the Doncaster listed winning two-year-old Be Ready was also a graduate of this academy and is now with Godolphin. Cooldine, Invictus and Quel Esprit were all top class graduates in the NH world but as Cheltenham nears the record could get even better.

Having sold recent Hennessy runner-up and improving seven-year-old Foxrock through the breeze-up route, along with both Monksland and the as yet unbeaten Faugheen, Slattery has potentially three live contenders in three championship races. A massive achievement for any producer of young stock.

FOUR-YEAR-OLDS

BALLYRISTEEN (IRE)

4yo b g

Beneficial - Granny Grouse (Rudimentary)

Tom Hassett

This is a fine big horse who is coming along very nicely. He has a lovely pedigree being from the family of Wither Or Which and Alexander Banquet. Standing about 16.2hh I won’t rush him and I would not be surprised if he turns out to be an autumn horse but we will see how the next month or two goes first. He cost 20,000 at the Tattersalls Ireland August sale.

BELLAMY (GB)

4yo ch g

Black Sam Bellamy - Bonne Anniversaire (Alflora)

Mrs Sharon Slattery

I think this is a really nice horse. He is a half-brother to a winner called Grey Missile but also another half-brother is Long Mile Road who we trained and thought an awful lot of. Sadly he didn’t fufil his potential as he had a problem but we were glad to get this half-brother and this fellow is showing us as much as the brother did. He should run at the end of March and cost €25,000 at the Derby Sale.

BRIN D’AVIONE (FR)

4yo b g

Califet - Nemenchka (Turgeon)

Mrs Sharon Slattery

This fellow came from Arqana and was a very forward. We had him ready for Belharbour and he pulled a muscle and missed that run. It won’t throw him back too far and having been fully fit already he should be back on track to run at the end of March or early April.

HILLFAB (IRE)

4yo b g

Flemensfirth - Miss Kettlewell (Saddlers’ Hall)

Mrs Sharon Slattery

We really think an awful of this fellow. He should be ready to run around April time and already shows all the right signs. He might just be the best of the bunch. He reminds me a lot of Foxrock and he has plenty of size and scope but doesn’t go like a big horse he is just very well balanced. His grandam is Native Endurance and the family included Mucklemeg and Total Success.

HIGGINSTOWN (IRE)

4yo b g

Mahler - Pharleng (Phardante)

R. Guiry

We bought this fellow as a foal for small money a few years ago. He has developed into a lovely horse and we did plenty with him in the autumn. He had a slight setback but is now fully back on track and jumps very well. He is a half-brother to a five times winner in Money Line and from the family of Montana Glen and Chicago Vic. We have had good luck with his owner who bred Midnight Thunder and Mala Beach.

INSPIRED POET (IRE)

4yo b g

Yeats - Petralona (Alleged)

Mrs Sharon Slattery

We gave a lot of money for this fellow. He was knocked down for €48,000 at the Land Rover Sale. He has a super pedigree being out of Petrolena who is a blacktype winner as a three-year-old and an own-sister to Eva Luna who is the dam of Brian Boru. This fellow is in fact a half-brother to four winners including Minella Rocco who was impressive recently. He could well be the one we bring to Horse And Jockey and he should run very well there.

KAGNEY (IRE)

4yo br g

Kalanisi - Clondalee (Presenting)

Mrs Sharon Slattery

This fellow was a little bit weak to begin with but yet worked very well. He is off at the moment but should be back in work very soon and as he most probably wants nicer ground he should come to hand at just the right time to get the ground he wants. Hopefully he will run towards the end of the spring. He is from the family of Addington Boy.

KALONDRA (IRE)

4yo b g

Spadoun - Mystic Vic (Old Vic)

Mrs Sharon Slattery

This fellow came from the Tattersalls Ireland August Sale for €10,000. He is out of an Old Vic mare and from the family of St Mellion Fairway and Kilbricken Money. He was a bit backward in his coat to begin with but it never affected his work and he goes very well. He can really gallop. He is showing us an awful lot now and we hope it’s not too good to be true. If he can back up his home work at the races I’ll be happy.

SUMMONED (IRE)

4yo b g

Kris Kin - Technohead (Distinctly North)

Mrs Sharon Slattery

I bought this fellow as a foal and he is a half-brother to Distime whom we trained. I always felt Distime was good enough to go blacktype but he has been a little unlucky. His dam is a winner over hurdles and I like the fact that we know the pedigree. This fellow is a horse who will run towards the end of the spring as he was a bit more backward than some of the others.

STAR TACKLE (IRE)

4yo b g (F)

Milan - Grangebridge (Strong Gale)

Mrs John Banville

This fellow stands 16.2hh and is a very nice type. He has already run when he fell at Tallow but I should not have run him. Declan Queally said he didn’t feel right from the off. He has been a bit sore since and I would say it must have been bothering him during the races as he jumps very well. Being a big horse he did well to come to hand so soon and being fully fit for that run he will come back to hand quickly when he is right.

UNNAMED

4yo b g

Arcadio - Cuddle In A Fog (Kings Ride)

Tom Quinlan

Every time we do something with this fellow he shows a little more than the last time and just continues to progress. He is a half-brother to the Robert Tyner-trained Pulled Mussel. Given the way he is progressing I’m leaning towards the autumn with him.

FIVE-YEAR-OLDS

ACCORD (IRE)

5yo b g (F)

Arcadio - Detente (Medicean)

John Morrison

We ran this fellow in Belharbour and thought he would win. He travelled very well until he fell. Thankfully he is fine and we will now bring him back again in a couple of weeks and he should take a lot of beating. His dam was placed on the flat which is where his speed comes from.

CARUMBA (IRE)

5yo b g (PP63P)

Gold Well - Sarah Marshall (Flemensfirth)

Mrs Sharon Slattery

To be honest this fellow has disappointed us so far. It seems that he likes space in a race and doesn’t enjoy big fields. He was third at Dungarvan but disappointed since. I’m going to keep running away at him as his home form is better than he has shown and hopefully he will get a liking for it and show what he can do.

CRIMSON ARK (IRE)

5yo b g

Arcadio - Crimson Flower (Soviet Lad)

John Morrison

He is owner bred and is a nice horse who is about 16.2hh and is out of a six times winning mare. He is only about three weeks off a run and looks a very exciting horse. We are looking forward to running him.

DON’TDROPMEIN (IRE)

5yo b g

Stowaway - Real Tempest (Phardante)

Bill Ryan

This is another owner bred horse who is only a few weeks off a run. His owner runs the Cormackstown schooling ground near Thurles. He is out of a winning mare and he goes very nicely so we will be able to get him out very soon.

EXECUTIVE PRINCE (IRE)

5yo bl g (4)

Presenting - Callanagh Pride (Executive Perk)

Mrs Sharon Slattery

This is a nice horse who had run at Ballysteen last year. Mikey O’Connor rode him and liked him a lot but he was very weak. We have given him plenty of time and it certainly seems to have worked. He is about three weeks off a run but the ground will determine if he gets to run as he wants it nice. Willie (Slattery) won a maiden hurdle on his dam at Thurles.

LORDS CHARIOT (IRE)

5yo b g

Beneficial - Be Airlie (Lord Americo)

Brendan O’Sullivan

His dam is out of an own-sister to Macgeorge and he is from the family of Chief Dan George. He had a break and could be back in time to run in May I would hope and does everything nicely.

MEDAL OF FREEDOM (IRE)

Mahler - Clashwilliam Girl (Seymour Hicks)

Mrs Sharon Slattery

This is a half-brother to Invictus who cost €42,000 at the Derby Sale. We had him ready to run on New Year’s Eve and he had a minor setback. We sent him to Brian O’Connell to get him going again and he is on the walker over there. I’d expect him to be ready to run again towards the end of the spring but he does need a cut in the ground so we may have to wait until the autumn.

MERCHANTS VENTURE (IRE)

5yo b g (P-5)

Publisher - Overthemas (Over The River)

Felix Quinn

We thought this fellow could be useful but we gave him two runs and he disappointed us. He has since been hobdayed and if he can show us at the races what he does at home he could win a few points. Hopefully, the hobday has done the trick.

SEAN BAN (IRE)

5yo b g (4)

Flemensfirth - Galingale (Galileo)

Mary Slattery

He has the makings of a proper horse. He ran well at Ballyvodock a couple of weeks ago but had a good blow. He will really come on for that and will hopefully run this weekend where I would expect him to go close. He is going to be a much stronger horse next season and I can see a lot of improvement likely in him as he is a frame waiting to fill.

TELMADELA (IRE)

5yo b g

Definite Article - Miss Pickering (Accordian)

Dr J. Waldron

This fellow has done everything very well so far. He is a super jumper and is showing plenty. He is of course a half-brother to Faugheen. He has been hobdayed and everything has gone very well in that regard. He was a little weak to begin with but could be running by mid-April.

OLDER HORSES

LETITSHINE

7yo b g (43F/)

Turtle Island - Shileags Pet (Ashmolean)

Mrs Margaret Slattery & Sean Hennessy

I thought this fellow could be a good horse but he gave leg trouble and hasn’t shown us his best yet. He will go to the confined race at Horse And Jockey if I have him fit in time and he could go on from there.

PRINCE OF MILAN (IRE)

10yo b g (21/)

Milan - Lough Gur (Religiously)

Brian Slattery

This fellow has been a good servant but a little disappointing recently. We are going to bring him back to point-to-points to get a spark back in him. I thought he could be even better than on the track so hopefully the move to point-to-points will do the trick. I’m afraid to sell him as he could make a fool of us!
