There was no luck for Aidan O’Brien in the first French juvenile Group 1 of the season in Deauville when his favourite Gstaad was unable to get on terms with the British-trained filly Venetian Sun and went down by a neck in the Sumbe Prix Morny.

The winner was adding to recent wins for fillies in the race by Campanelle and Lady Aurelia.

Already winner at Royal Ascot and at the Newmarket July meeting, in the Group 3 Albany Stakes and the Group 2 Duchess Of Cambridge Stakes, this was a first Group 1 for her Tally Ho Stud-based sire Starman.

American runner Outfielder made the early running with Gstaad with Coppull and Venetian Sun and Godolphin’s Wise Approach in behind.

Coppull briefly looked the winner before Wise Approach and Venetian Sun came on his outside as Gstaad came under pressure and looked beaten. But in the final furlong Gstaad found a response to Ryan Moore’s urgings and looked the winner again before Venetian Sun found that bit more for Clifford Lee, to win for owners Tony Bloom & Ian McAleavy.

Speaking on Sky Sports Racing afterwards, rider Clifford Lee who was riding his first Group 1 winner, said: “What a great filly she is to ride and she tries so hard. We went a nice even gallop and when I did hit the front, picked up well and she pricked her ears a little bit.

I think she will be even better over seven furlongs and the ground was quite quick today.”

Karl Burke also said when interviewed: "She's unbelievable, she does everything so relaxed. I've been saying for a little while that she's a special filly and she's proved it there.

"Early on in the year she stood out in the string and I said to her owners a month ago, she doesn't quite stand out as much and the others have caught her up a little bit, but she's still got so much ability.

Paddy Power quoted the winner at Venetian Sun at 9/4 Cheveley Park Stakes 9/4 from 7/2 and 5/2 for the Moyglare Stud Stakes, which trainer Karl Burke said will be her next outing.
