HALF Yours, the 2025 Caulfield and Melbourne Cup winner, was handed top weight of 59 kgs for the A$10.2 million Melbourne Cup following the release of weights on Wednesday.
Conversely, for the $6.55 million Caulfield Cup, top weight of 59 kgs was handed to Sir Delius.
“Sir Delius, a three-time Group 1 winner, stands out as the best-performed horse and natural top weight for this year’s Caulfield Cup, however his absence from the Melbourne Cup has necessitated two different sets of weights,” said Racing Victoria Chief Handicapper, David Hegan.
“Half Yours was the dominant Caulfield and Melbourne Cup champion in 2025 and has been weighted accordingly.”
Joseph O’Brien’s Defiantly, equal first in the order of entry for the Melbourne Cup, has been handed 56.5 kgs, the same weight given to stablemate Highwayman and to Aidan O’Brien’s Christmas Day.
Also from the Joseph O’Brien yard, Sons And Lovers and Trustyourinstinct have 57.5 and 55 kgs respectively, whilst last year’s Melbourne Cup runner-up Goodie Two Shoes has been allocated 55 kgs. All are well within the order of entry, where a field limit of 24 applies.
The highest rated of the Irish-trained horses in the Caulfield Cup is Sons And Lovers, who has been given 56 kgs and is 13th in the order of entry, just ahead of his stablemates Trustyourinstinct and Defiantly, who have 55.5 and 55 kgs respectively.
Defiantly is 17th in the order of entry for the Caulfield Cup, which has a field limit of 18 and four emergencies.
