YEOMANSTOWN Stud stalwart Dark Angel sired an Italian Guineas double at San Siro on Friday, as Grand Son Of Dark ran out an impressive winner of the colts’ classic, while the Ed Dunlop-trained Just Call Me Angel landed the fillies’ feature.
Grand Son Of Dark drew three and a half lengths clear in the Group 3, providing Endo Botti with his second success in three years. Tim Donworth’s French raider Zambezi chased him home under Chris Hayes, with the Marco Botti-trained Sunset On Leros another three lengths further back under Marco Ghiani.
The Italian Derby is now the dream for the Fabio Manservigi-owned colt, who was bred by Alexander Bloodstock and bought by Marco Bozzi for £52,000 from Mountarmstrong Stud at the Goffs UK Premier Yearling Sale. Bozzi bought the half-sister by Kodi Bear at last week’s Tattersalls Guineas Breeze Up Sale for 34,000gns.
British raiders filled the first two places in the 1000 Guineas, as Just Call Me Angel followed up on her course and distance win in the Group 2 Premio Dormello in October. Jason Hart was in the saddle this time, partnering the Cayton Park Stud home-bred to a half-length win over Marco Botti’s Lizzana, a 9,000gns yearling by Saxon Warrior.
Dunlop’s father, John, won this race back in 1989 with Miss Secreto, ridden by Steve Cauthen. John Dunlop completed the Italian Guineas double that year, landing the colts’ classic with Sikeston, partnered by Gianfranco Dettori.
