CHARLIE Johnston added another feather to his cap when Timeforshowcasing justified favouritism in Sunday’s German 1000 Guineas, a race twice won by his father.

The 15,000gns yearling won her first two starts as a juvenile and, after two defeats at group level, landed a £100,000 contest at Glorious Goodwood. The Jaber Abdullah-owned filly made a successful return in the Listed Burradon Stakes at Newcastle in April, but failed to make an impression in the 1000 Guineas at Newmarket.

Partnered by Jack Mitchell at Dusseldorf, the Showcasing filly raced prominently throughout and was ridden to lead approaching the final furlong, keeping on well to score by a length and a half.

Yann Barberot’s Indifferente, a listed winner over course and distance last time, claimed runner-up honours, whilst Michael O’Callaghan’s representative Sky Watch picked up valuable blacktype in third under Jamie Powell.

“It’s brilliant,” Johnston later commented. “We’ve won it a couple of times with Main Edition and Nyaleti and I thought this was a filly in a similar mould, who would come here with a favourite’s chance and I’m delighted she has got the job done.

“In a way, she might be difficult to place now, as she’ll have a penalty in a lot of places and we might have to roll the dice in a big one again, but today was D-day in her season and she’s gone and won nicely.”

Future targets

Timeforshowcasing is entered in the Coronation Stakes, which remains a possibility, but connections are keeping options open, the trainer explained.

“She’s also won an automatic entry to the Falmouth Stakes today,” he said. “I’d also not rule out going up to 10 furlongs if we wanted to. I think she’s probably better with a bit of ease in the ground, which she has had here and the ground was probably a bit too quick for her at Newmarket, certainly down the hill.

“Ground therefore might be something we have to consider going forwards, but now she has won a Group 2, I’m sure she will be rolling the dice in a few Group 1s at home during the summer.”

Both German Guineas have been farmed by British trainers this year, with Simon and Ed Crisford having previously taken the colts’ classic with the Coolmore-owned Title Role. Karl Burke completed a 1-2 for Great Britain with Shayem.
