BILLY Lee will be crowned champion jockey for the first time at the Curragh on Sunday.

The 40-year-old rider is riding at the Breeders’ Cup on Saturday but expects to make it back in time to ride in the first race at the Curragh, due off at 12.17pm.

From Ballingarry in Co Limerick, Lee has ridden 98 Irish winners so far this season.

Heading into last night’s Dundalk fixture, Paddy Harnett was two winners in front of Sam Coen following a remarkable treble for Harnett on Wednesday. Reese Holohan was also in contention for much of the season.

Aidan O’Brien has secured the Irish champion trainer title for the 29th time, while the Coolmore partners will receive the champion owner trophy for the 28th time.

The Curragh will also make presentations to Wesley Joyce, who was voted by the public as having put up the Leading Riding Performance of the Year at the Curragh for his winning ride on Genesis in the Dubai Duty Free Rockingham Handicap.

Denis Hogan’s outstanding training achievements with Meridien, which include success in the Neville Homes Summer Fillies Handicap, earned him the most votes in the Leading Training Performance of the Year category of the Curragh’s annual awards.
