THE shortlists of the top three in each category have been revealed for the 2025 Eclipse Award Finalists in the US.
There is Irish and European interest as, from his win in the Grade 1 American Grand National Hurdle, Gordon Elliott’s Zanahiyr is nominated in the top Steeplechase Horse category.
However, Riverdee Stable’s Irish-bred Cool Jet had three wins to his name over the season and may have the support.
Charlie Appleby’s Notable Speech and Rebel’s Romance stand against the home team’s dual Grade 1 winner for Miguel Clement, Deterministic, in the Male Turf Horse shortlist. Notable Speech’s Woodbine Mile and Breeders’ Cup Mile wins might shade it for him.
The Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Turf winner Gstaad gets a nomination in the two-year-old Male category but this is dominated by the Juvenile winner, the unbeaten Ted Noffey.
Kentucky Derby and Belmont Stakes winner Sovereignty heads Journalism and Baeza in the Three-Year-Old Male category and then must take on the Breeders’ Cup Classic winner Forever Young, who heads Nysos and Sierra Leone in the Older Dirt Horse list, for the ultimate Horse of the Year Award.
Heroics
Though she didn’t live up to last year’s heroics, Thorpedo Anna’s four wins should give her the Older Dirt Female over Scylla and Breeders’ Cup winner Splendora.
Godolphin are prominent in the leading owner and breeders’ list again as their three-year-old filly Good Cheer takes on Nitrogen and Shisospicy in the Three-Year-Old Filly category
In the Female Turf Horse, Francis Graffard’s Breeders’ Cup winner Gezora will battle with the filly she beat at Del Mar, She Feels Pretty, who had two Grade 1 wins herself, and Breeders’ Cup Turf Sprint winner Shisospicy.
She was an outsider in the race but Super Corredora’s win over fellow shortlister Explora in the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Fillies should give her the Two-Year-Old Filly Award. The top trainer is between Chad Brown, Brad Cox and Bill Mott while jockey honours are between Irad Ortiz, Flavien Prat and John Velazquez.
In the apprentice jockey award, Pietro Moran, son of Irishman Davy Moran, is one of the shortlisted three.
