FATHER and son team Peter and Paul Snowden celebrated their first Group 1 since leaving Darley with victory in last Saturday’s Caulfield Guineas, ironically, with Shooting To Win, a horse they received from John O’Shea who took over as head-trainer at Darley, now Godolphin in Australia.
“It means a lot, I never thought we would be on this sort of stage this early,” said an emotional Paul Snowden.
A colt by the deceased Northern Meteor, Shooting To Win began to show his colours with a third in the Group 1 Golden Rose before winning the Group 2 Stan Fox Stakes three weeks ago.
“We really trust his ability and it shone through today, thank God,” said Snowden. “He’s just a very special horse. From day one you just knew he was good.”
Always handy from barrier eight, Shooting To Win was six back, one off the rail as the hot-favourite Rich Enuff was asked to work early from a wide gate to find the lead.
Ridden with impeccable timing by James McDonald, Shooting To Win was there if good enough on the turn and so it proved.
The Written Tycoon colt Rich Enuff paid for his early effort going down by a gallant long-neck with the Snitzel colt Wandjina making good late ground to edge Kumaon.
A $160,000 Magic Millions yearling, Shooting To Win is the fourth individual Group 1 winner for Northern Meteor whose final crop of yearlings hit the sales next year. He will now be rested for the spring. “He’ll be on the truck home tonight and all being well in the paddock on Monday,” added Paul.
