EASED back in the early stages of the New Zealand 1000 Guineas, Risque had just three of the 13 runners behind her at the mid-way point as the pace lacked the spice of fast run 1,600 metres.

Hooked eight wide on the bend, the long striding daughter of Darci Brahma appreciated the free flowing room to power to the front at the 200-metre mark, going on to post a two and three-quarter length win.

Second was the Alamosa filly Strada Cavallo with the Coats Choice filly Dezzies Dream in third.

“There is a lot more to come and I’m thinking forward to the Oaks. She relaxes so beautifully. She is filly of the year material,” said co-trainer Stephen Autridge.

GUINEAS dOUBLE

Sporting the white with blue band of the Oaks Stud, Risque completed the Guineas double for the Te Akau Racing partnership of Stephen Autridge and Jamie Richards.

Along with jockey Matthew Cameron, the trio had won the 2000 Guineas a week earlier in spectacular fashion with Xtravagant.

They completed Saturday’s effort at Riccarton with four winners and are mindfull of how fleeting success can be: “We might never again experience a week like we’ve just had,” said Autridge who also highlighted the effort of their juvenile Smart Missile filly, Sassy ‘N’ Smart to take out the Listed Welcome Stakes and remain undefeated from two starts.

“I identified her early as a (Group 2 Matamata) Breeders Stakes type and she’s shaping that way,” added Autridge.
