THE move by Chris Waller to secure the services of the Hong Kong-based jockey Joao Moreira to ride his lightweight chance He’s Your Man in the Group 1 Epsom Stakes over the ‘Randwick mile’ last Saturday proved an inspired choice.

With four runners in the 15 horse field Waller landed the first and second as Moreira, with his 52.5kg impost, lifted He’s Your Man in the final 50 metres to edge out the Redoute’s Choice mare Royal Descent by the most meagre of margins.

Third a length and a half away was Hooked, who provided an immediate return for new owner Sean Buckley who paid A$600,000 for the Casino Prince entire three days earlier at the Patinack Farm dispersal sale conducted by Magic Millions.

“We got it right today,” said Waller. “Both horses ran very well, but I feel for Royal Descent’s connections, and for her. We won’t tell her she didn’t win, she’s a winner in my eyes and she’s going to get her chance in the Cox Plate.”

The win gave Moreira a maiden Group 1 win in Australia and completed a treble on the day for the Brazilian-born jockey. “This is really, really special for me,” he said. “I have chased a Group 1 win in Australia for probably four or five years and finally we have got there so that means a lot to me.”

For He’s Your Man, Flemington looks his destination. “He could go to a race like the (Group 1) Mackinnon (on Victoria Derby Day). We know now he is a very good miler and I think he is still well in the handicaps, and there is a race called the Doncaster next year,” added Waller.

A French-bred Cape Cross gelding, He’s Your Man was bought out of the Alain de Royer-Dupré yard by the same connections that purchased Reliable Man from the Royer-Dupré yard and tasted Group 1 success in the 2013 Queen Elizabeth Stakes with him.
