THE Metropolitan Handicap over 2,400 metres, the final race of the day at Randwick made it four group winners on the day for Chris Waller and completed a second Group 1 stable one-two.

A British-bred Haafhd gelding, Junoob took advantage of the strong tempo to take up the running with 600 metres to go.

He went on to grind out a half-length win over his stablemate, the Oasis Dream entire Opinion with the High Chaparral entire Araldo third.

Just 0.15 seconds outside the course record the win again highlights the success Waller has had with European-bred horses.

A 3,500gns purchase at the 2011 Tattersalls Autumn Horses In Training by Amy Weaver, Junoob was then claimed by Tom Dascombe for £12,000 before Waller’s team entered the fray as they now prepare for the $3 million Caulfield Cup on October 19th.

“It is a race that owners dream about and it is a part of racing history, so you want to go there,” said Waller who reflected on a superlative day for his stable.

“This is our (Sydney’s) grand final and to have day like that I’m very proud.

“It’s now on to Melbourne with horses in form. I’m not looking to takeover down there but we will be very competitive.”

Junoob was subsequently re-handicapped 1.5kgs for the Caulfield and Melbourne Cups, taking him to 53.5kg and 55.5kg respectively.
