ANDRE FABRE’S smart three-year-old Waldgeist has been supplemented for next Wednesday’s Group 1 Grosser Preis von Bayern at Munich, the final European Group 1 race of 2017. The Galileo colt was just touched off in the Prix du Jockey Club by Brametot and put up arguably his best performance when a close fourth in the Irish Derby, form which reads well courtesy of Capri and Cracksman’s subsequent achievements.

Waldgeist was bred by a partnership of Gestüt Ammerland, owned by Munich race club president Dietrich von Boetticher, and Newsells Park Stud. The Coolmore “lads” also hold a share of the three-year-old. He will be ridden by French champion jockey Pierre-Charles Boudot.

Waldgeist is not the only supplementary entry for the race, as trainer Jens Hirschberger has put in the six-year-old Wild Chief, who will remarkably be partnered by 60-year-old jockey Kevin Woodburn. Lancashire-born Woodburn was German champion jockey in 1997 and retired in 2001, but has made a successful and somewhat sensational comeback as an amateur since last year. Wild Chief, a son of Sunnyhill Stud’s Doyen, has some solid performances to his name, but it will be a surprise if he can hold his own in this company.

Nine runners have been declared for the race, which includes the best three older horses in Germany, all specialists at this distance of one and a half miles. Guignol (Jean-Pierre Carvalho/Filip Minark) made all the running to win the race last year at 30/1 but his performances this year, including his victory in the Group 1 Grosser Preis von Baden, have shown that he was no fluke winner.

Iquitos (Hans-Jürgen Gröschel/Daniele Porcu) finished second to Guignol in Baden Baden before finishing a highly respectable seventh in the Arc. Dschingis Secret (Markus Klug/Adrie de Vries) is the highest-rated horse in Germany and was far from disgraced himself when finishing one place ahead of Iquitos at Chantilly.

It will be very surprising if anything else gets a look in.

TONY Martin’s Laganore has travelled to Rome to take her chance in tomorrow’s Group 1 Premio Lydia Tesio at Capannelle. The Newtown Anner Stud filly finished third in the same race last season and will have the services of title-chasing Colin Keane this time around.

The ground is currently soft in Capannelle which should suit the daughter of Fastnet Rock who was last seen winning a Group 3 impressively on heavy going at Gowran Park.

She sets a fair standard for her nine rivals which include six three-year-olds who will each receive a 5lb allowance. Also among the declarations is Absolute Blast, who represents Lambourn-based trainer Archie Watson and was last seen finishing second to Aidan O’Brien’s War Decree in a Group 3 at Dundalk.
