Williams and Weir in fabulous form

MULTIPLE winners at Flemington are tough to come by but Craig Williams and Darren Weir put on a clinic last Saturday. Williams rode six winners and a second from nine rides, while Weir saddled up four winners.

Chasing a seventh end-of-season title, 41-year-old Williams now has a nine win break on his rivals with six meetings to left in the 2017/18 season.

In regards the trainers, it’s Weir first, daylight second. His tally of 132 is nearly double that of the team of David Hayes, Tom Dabernig and Ben Hayes with a fifth consecutive Melbourne Premiership a formality.

Winning earlier in the day with the Irish-bred Sixties Groove, Weir also surpassed his Australian training record with his 450th winner for the season. By the weekend’s close Weir staggering volume of 2,969 starters for the season had won 454 times.

Winx on target for race return

MARK down August 18th as the day Winx seeks to pass Black Caviar’s 25 straight wins. The race will be the Group 1 Winx Stakes, formerly known as the Warwick Stakes. Set to be her season debut over 1,400 metres at Randwick, Winx has won his race the past two years when it was still a Group 2. Victory would give her a 30th career win and lift her earnings above A$19 million.

“Her attitude and body language is great,” reported Chris Waller this week. “We’ve been training her long enough to almost be used to it (the pressure). The first year was just like training any other horse, the second year the pressure was on with the expectation to keep her performing.

“Do we try new things, keep it the same? Her body was changing. The third year she went to a whole new level again, getting close to Black Caviar’s records and other records, but now she has reached her fourth year, it’s just like last year but we’ve been there before. I’m actually feeling quite relaxed about her.”
