THE Gold Coast Magic Millions raceday, washed out after two races last Saturday, was completed on Thursday with local champion trainer Tony Gollan securing an elusive maiden win in the A$2 million Magic Millions 2YO Classic over 1,200 metres.
His Better Than Ready filly Skirt The Law burst from midfield to race to a two-length win, with Gollan the first Queensland trainer to win the feature since Jason McLachlan with Phelan Ready in 2009. “This day, we have won a lot of races on it but this race has been hard, this ticks all the boxes,” said Gollan. “This is one of the biggest thrills I have had in racing.”
A $170,000 Gold Coast Magic Millions yearling, Skirt The Law also took home the $350,000 Magic Millions Women In Racing bonus on top of her A$1.16 million winner’s cheque.
“She’s a beauty. John Foote and the team bought her at the sales. I know we all say when we buy them that we’re going to get back here next year, but we identified her early as an early type, and all she’s done is improve,” said Gollan.
“Brian Siemsen is one of my best friends in the world and to put a group of ladies together like this, it has been amazing. The group chats started lighting up after her first start, talking about getting here.”
With 11 of the ownership group first-time owners talk will now shift towards the Golden Slipper with Skirt The Law a perfect three from three.
“She can handle wet ground, it’s not that wet today obviously but she can adapt to soft conditions, which you need in the autumn (for the Golden Slipper).”
Ridden by Ryan Maloney who has won all three races on her, Skirt The Law defeated the $6.50 race favourite, the Zoustar filly Platinum Jubilee, with Summer Loving, by Exceed And Excel, providing a clean sweep for the fillies in third.
Tony Gollan rounded the day out nicely winning the final on the card, the $1 million Magic Millions Cup over 1,425 metres, with the I Am Invincible gelding Vinco.
THE Deep Field gelding Fashion Legend provided a career highlight for Richard Freedman and his co-trainer, son Will, winning the A$2 million Magic Millions 3YO Guineas over 1,425 metres. A $260,000 Gold Coast Magic Millions yearling Fashion Legend has now won five from eight.
Hard ridden around the bend by Josh Parr, Fashion Legend had plenty to do to run down the leader but refused to yield, getting over the top of Spiritualised to then hold off the fast-finishing Yellow Brick who took second ahead of The Hell I Am in third. “I’m lost for words, it is definitely the biggest thrill of my life,” said Will Freedman. “It is pretty indescribable. (Owner) Bon Ho was one of my early clients in Scone and we bought this horse, trained it at Scone and then came to town.
“This was the first horse I ever bought him and I sent him an email saying that I was a struggling Scone trainer and I needed some horses. He went, ‘I like the sound of you’ and gave me a go. Now I’ve won the Magic Millions Guineas.”
