MYER CLASSIC

(GROUP 1)

THE Myer Classic for fillies and mares over 1,600 metres saw Fastnet Rock complete a Group 1 Derby Day double with the win of the filly Shoals, aptly named from the mare The Broken Shore, herself a half-sister to Redoute’s Choice.

Runner-up in the 1000 Guineas, Shoals took on the older mares, sitting up on the pace set by Global Glamour, she went to the lead inside the final 300 metres before holding on to win by a nose from the I Am Invincible mare Eckstein, with another nose to the Street Sense mare Dixie Blossoms.

“That was very satisfying,” said trainer Anthony Freedman. “We were always going to go forward and take any bad luck out of play and use the weight advantage (50kg). It was pretty much the same ride he (Dean Yendall) did last year (when winning on I Am A Star). She’s a pretty tough filly, not very big but incredibly tough, trouble-free and straightforward.”
