Magic Millions J. J. Atkins Plate (Group 1)

FIFTH in the Group 1 Champagne Stakes at his second start, the early portents for Prince Fawaz were on show. At this, his fifth start, his career is already bearing fruit with a well taken win in the Group 1 JJ Atkins at Eagle Farm on Saturday.

By Fastnet Rock, the Anthony Cummings-trained colt had the last shot at the Shooting To Win colt Kubrick to win by a head in the 1,600-metre for juveniles, the 37th individual Group 1 winner for his sire. Third was the Snitzel colt Reloaded.

Johnny Allen on the previously unbeaten Kubrick was rueing his run. “He got there too soon and, out in the middle of the track he was a little lost and green.”

For Kerrin McEvoy on Prince Fawaz the result couldn’t have worked out better. “He has certainly got gears, and when he got there it felt like there was more there if I needed it.”

A $220,000 Magic Millions yearling, Prince Fawaz has been tagged into the big picture by his trainer. “We have a Group 1 already. It is great for Fastnet Rock,” said Cummings. “We will get him to the Golden Rose first-up, and the Caulfield Guineas and Cox Plate are races he could line up in as well.”
