TAB AUSTRALIAN CUP

(GROUP 1)

THE New Zealand-bred Humidor, with Damien Lane in the saddle, defied a day that favoured leaders to land the Group 1 Australian Cup at Flemington on Saturday. The Teofilo gelding came with a strong run with 300 metres to race to wear down last year’s Caulfield Cup winner, the Myboycharlie mare Jameka with the Beat Hollow horse Exosphere (races in Australia as Exospheric) third.

“This was the goal, we have just targeted this race,” said trainer Darren Weir.

Humidor will now go to Sydney to try and break the ‘Weir hoodoo’. Melbourne’s leading trainer has yet to train a winner in Sydney. “The BMW, a mile and a half looks ideal really, providing the horse pulls up well.” Run on March 25th, the Group 1 over 2,400 metres is worth $1.5 million.
